Ten tracks, all penned by one man, and a title lifted from a Japanese comic about a solitary swordsman. The Finnish band Beast in Black released their debut album Berserker on November 3, 2017, via Nuclear Blast, and the record functioned as much as a literary endeavor as a musical one. Every song on Berserker originated with Anton Kabanen, the guitarist and keyboardist who also handled the production, recording, mixing, and orchestration of the album. He made no secret of his source material. The album title directly references Kentaro Miura's manga Berserk, and several lyrics follow its plot and characters precisely. The clearest instances are found in the tracklist. 'Beast in Black' kicks off the standard edition, while 'Zodd the Immortal' and 'The Fifth Angel' transform specific figures from the manga into metal anthems. Kabanen constructed an entire debut around someone else's fictional universe—a risky move for a new band seeking an audience. The standard tracklist also featured 'Blood of a Lion' as its third track, followed by 'Born Again' and the manga-inspired 'Zodd the Immortal.' Further through the album, 'Crazy, Mad, Insane' and 'Eternal Fire' maintained a relentless pace, while the closing track, 'Ghost in the Rain,' extended past five minutes for a more atmospheric conclusion. The group gave listeners a preview before the album's arrival. 'Blind and Frozen' was released as a single on September 8, 2017, and 'Born Again' dropped on the same day as the album. Behind Kabanen stood vocalist Yannis Papadopoulos, whose high, clear vocals carried the manga-inspired narratives over driving riffs and synth layers. The band also released 'Beast in Black' as a single on October 30, 2017, just days before the album's release. A fourth single, 'Zodd the Immortal,' followed on December 22, extending the album's visibility beyond its initial week. The gamble initially succeeded domestically. Berserker reached seventh place on the Finnish chart, a strong start for a debut. Sweden pushed it to 13, Switzerland to 33, and Germany to 51. Even France, where metal sung in English faces a tougher ascent, saw the album enter at 169. The record also charted in Britain, proving that a Finnish band singing about a Japanese manga could connect far beyond Helsinki. The standard edition of the album remains concise enough to keep the concept focused without tiring the listener. Kabanen managed nearly every sound on the record himself: guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, production, recording, mixing, and orchestration. That degree of control ensured Berserker sounded exactly as he envisioned the world of Miura's manga: dramatic, melodic, and unapologetically heavy. Supporting Kabanen, the rest of the group filled out the sound: Kasperi Heikkinen on guitar, Mate Molnar on bass, and Sami Hänninen on drums. Teemu Koivistoinen contributed backing vocals, while Roman Ismailov crafted the artwork that gave the manga-inspired concept its visual form. Nine years later, Berserker remains the bedrock of Beast in Black's identity. The subsequent studio album, From Hell with Love, would build upon this foundation, but it all began with one songwriter's decision to turn his favorite comic into a metal debut and trust that listeners would follow him into that world.
