In May 2026, German pop singer Sarah Engels stood on the Eurovision stage in Vienna with a song called "Fire" and finished 23rd out of 25 finalists, with 12 points. That result could have looked like the end of a story. Instead, it was just the latest chapter for a performer who has spent fifteen years turning setbacks into reasons to try again. Sarah Engels was born on October 15, 1992.

From Cologne to the talent show

Sarah Engels was born on 15 October 1992 in Cologne, Germany, and has Italian roots. She works in pop music and is also known as a television presenter. Her label is Ariola. But before any of that, she was a teenager knocking on the door of Germany's biggest talent show, Deutschland sucht den Superstar.

The show did not open easily for her. In the 2009 season she reached a list of 120 finalists but missed the first live broadcast because she did not have enough votes. A year later she was out after a duet. Then came the eighth season, and a strange twist: she was eliminated after the first episode, but the broadcaster RTL removed another contestant, Nina Richel, for health reasons, and Sarah Engels came back.

A second place that changed everything

That return changed everything. On 7 May 2011 she reached the final and finished second, losing to Pietro Lombardi, with 48.1 percent of the votes. She became the fifth woman to make the final in the show's history. The two finalists later married, in 2013, and she took his surname, becoming known for a while as Sarah Lombardi. They had a son, and in 2016 she announced their separation.

The next years brought a new family and a new name. In 2020 she became engaged to the footballer Julian Büscher, and they married in 2021. This time the surname went the other way: her husband took her maiden name, Engels, and the family uses it. She has released four studio albums, but the most recent one tested her in a way the talent show never did.

The album that tested her

In August 2025 she released her fourth studio album, "Strong Girls Club". It is a double album: one half of the songs are in German, the other half in English. The record entered the German album chart at number 53, then slipped to 54 in its second week and left the chart. It became the lowest-charting album of her career, a bruising moment for an artist who had once been a national finalist.

So when the German national selection for Eurovision 2026 came around, she had a choice. She could protect herself after the album's failure, or she could walk back into a live competition in front of the whole country. She entered with "Fire", won the selection, and earned the right to represent Germany in Vienna. Because Germany belongs to the Big Four, her song went straight into the final.

She could protect herself after the album's failure, or she could walk back into a live competition in front of the whole country.

The final took place on 16 May 2026, and the result was harsh: 23rd place out of 25, with 12 points. But the pattern is the point. Sarah Engels keeps entering arenas where the outcome is public and the risk is real, from a talent show that first sent her home to a Eurovision final that put her near the bottom. At 34, she is still the same person who walked back onto that stage in 2011.
